To Be or Do?

February 9th, 2010 by Dan Nichols

This past Winter Break I went to Passion 2010 – a conference in Atlanta, GA for 22,000+ college students. The theme of this conference was Isaiah 26:8 which says, “Yes, LORD, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and your renown are the desire of our hearts.”

Pastor Andy Stanley was one of the speakers, and his message was simply this: Are you more concerned with what you do or who you are?

Honestly, most of my life has been totally consumed with what I do. I have been known by my schedule, my accomplishments and my future goals. I have not focused on being the man God wants me to be to the extent that it has defined me. I have focused more on doing what God wants me to do – which is only wrong when it’s out of place on the priority list.

I have taken many opportunities to grow here in my time at Baptist Bible College. This school has innumerable opportunities for personal growth. However, I regret that I did not take as many opportunities as I could have.

If you are a disciple of Christ, focus on being the person God wants you to be. Then He will show you what you are to do. Baptist Bible College is a great place to work on personal growth. The only wisdom I would give is to take advantage of it while you are here – FULL advantage.

Curious, I raised the cover of the cardboard container that time had faded from lemon yellow to a golden honey color. Inside were postcard-size snapshots of grade school classes, family gatherings, and relatives I didn’t recognize.

In that box of sweet memories, my grandmother had tucked away a heart-shaped greeting card dated February 13, 1915. She would have been 10 years old then.

I found it interesting that the Valentine, with its rhyming verse to “the dearest and sweetest girl I know,” wasn’t signed. Maybe it came from a secret admirer. I can only wonder now.

The tradition of giving Valentines began centuries ago when people wrote their own romantic messages to one another, the earliest dating back to the 1400s. Then, by the early 1800s, hand-painted Valentines decorated with lace and paper flowers were popular in England.

In 1850, Esther Howland, an American artist and printer, was the first to publish and sell Valentines in the United States. The rest is history, as they say. Except for Christmas, more cards are exchanged on Valentine’s Day than any other time of year.

A Valentine expresses your love for someone, usually in a few sentimental sentences. The Bible has been described as God’s love letter to us. Like a Valentine, verse after verse tells us how much God loves us.

“I have loved thee with an everlasting love,” He tells us through the pen of the prophet Jeremiah (3:13). The apostle Paul was persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

John, one of Jesus’ disciples, said we love God because He first loved us. (1 John 4:19). God showed His love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). In the New Testament, we find 1 Corinthians 13, known as the love chapter. John 3:16 tells just how great God loves every one of us.

“For God (the greatest lover) so loved (to the greatest degree) the world (the greatest number) that He gave (the greatest act) His only begotten Son (the greatest gift) that whosoever (the greatest invitation) believeth (the greatest simplicity) in Him (the greatest person) should not perish (the greatest promise) but have (the greatest certainty) everlasting life (the greatest possession).”

Theologian Karl Barth was once asked, “What is the greatest thought you ever had?” He replied, “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” God is love and it is no secret how much He loves you and me. Just open your Bible and read the greatest love letter of all time.

ChurchOfThe.net is an 8 year old ministry that has served in many capacities for nearly the last decade… we have had Live Bible Cams, Forums, debates, and we even raised $35,000 after Hurricane Katrina to aid the setup of communications in Louisiana and Mississippi!

To answer your question, YES! If you would like to join COTN (ChurchOfThe. Net) you are joining an IDEAL Scriptural “Church” .. or a meeting of the “Called Out”…No where in the Bible is a church referred to as a building. Nor is it ever referred to as a corporate entity. According to the Word of God, church means people.

COTN is not created for the average Brick-and-mortar Church-goer. We may share many ideals and even doctrine, however we do not beleive the newest phase of ”Seeker Oriented” and “Guilt them into attendance” methodology, so you will have to leave your judgments, pre-conceived notions of others and 80 mph rush to Sunday School behind you.

Our main goal is to tear down the barriers of a traditional brick-n-mortar church, and to share the good news based on our personal experiences with Jesus Christ… facilitate worship, bible studies, and a REAL christian fellowship is more easily accomplished directly on the internet!

COTN members couldn’t be more “comfortable” anywhere than right in their own homes!

COTN is safe from the type of judgment that many have come to find in Traditional churches, since no one on the internet knows if you’re an average joe or if you’re sporting a purple mohawk or a hundred extra pounds.

Disabled people who cannot get to a real-life church can have an opportunity to worship and fellowship with other believers. The scheduling issues of night shift workers become a thing of the past in an environment that’s open 24 hours a day.

Welcome!
